Take a deep breath and one will inhale the pollution that the sprawling capital is known for. The grey roads are rarely empty, and London Underground stations seem to lurk on every other street, protruding red signs drawing the eye. Squat, red phoneboxes are clumped together at regular intervals, often filled with flyers for everything from live music to prostitutes.
The centre is a mass of old buildings and new, with few residential areas in the heart of the city. Hotels, bed and breakfasts and hostels take up the majority of living space beside the shops and halls. Theatres, pubs, clubs, art galleries, music venues and famous stores all hunker within twenty minutes of one another, and crimson double-decker buses screech throughout the city almost constantly.
Sightseeing buses are almost as common, particularly around landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. Every major landmark has stalls with merchandise nearby, and even entire shops dedicated to memorabilia on the subject in question. It is impossible to walk ten minutes without seeing a shop offering 'unique souvenirs' to tourists.
Those who get too close to Scotland Yard, out of curiosity or the wish to take photographs, had best be wary about it. If one gets near enough, they will be warned off the premises in no uncertain terms. Anyone wishing to visit a market famous for its diversity would do best to stop by Portobello Road, where rummaging long enough will purportedly find all the treasure in the world (and also all the rubbish).
For those intending to have a good night out, they are spoilt for choice, although tourists should be warned that the pubs close between 10pm and 11pm throughout the city. A select few disobey the laws and stay open if one can find the back door, and most nightclubs can stay open to midnight or 1am.
