Kate watched the strange young business man babble on, finally giving voice to the questions that had apparently bothered him enough that he'd gone through the trouble of sending an owl to the wife of his apparently estranged friend.  Nat had mentioned a lot of names of people Kate didn't know, but she was sure she'd never heard Christopher Lemon among them.  The quicker he fired questions at her the softer her eyes grew, and although her mouth remained set a hint of her good nature was back at the corners.

"He's hurt your feelings then." She reasoned sympathetically, "oh I am sorry.  He can do that, I've learned....I don't think he really thinks about it at all, how his actions effect other people..."

She straightened herself again in her chair and thought over the questions.  Now that this silly intervie charade had been dropped she was much more comfortable with the personal questions.  "It's a terribly long story, really, but my grandparents convinced my parents that I'd be better off being betrothed, and, oh..it seems silly now, I know.  But that's how we do things of course.  Anyway, I agreed to come over here and meet him...except we met in a pub before we even knew!  Isn't that delightful?  Anyway, we got along well enough, and I wasn't in a special rush, but he..." She frowned, because Kate still wasn't sure why Nat had been in a rush either.  "Anyway, when you're betrothed, why should it matter when you get married.  He wanted to hurry, and he is to be my husband..is. he is my husband."

She smiled down at her hands, only partially forced.  "But, I don't know anything about any situation, or anything else that you're going on about."

“I do need singers for this event,” he continued. “And what better way to meet the missus? I might as well kill two birds with one stone, as they say, since I was probably going to hire you, anyway. I mean, unless you turned out to be a hideous, fat cow, or something. Obviously.”

"I would like to sing." Kate admitted, trying politely to ignore the fact he thought she might have been a cow.  "And it would give me something to do, you know, supposing the eggs hatch..." Because they had to both know she wouldn't have any Valentine's Day plans if Nat's dragons needed him.
