Prim had a date with her boyfriend before dinner.

Now, she was not a baby.  Prim knew perfectly well that Connor was not really her boyfriend.  He liked her well enough, but Connor fancied Chase’s girlfriend, that pale Ravenclaw girl with the dirty shoes.  Primrose wasn’t even technically supposed to have boyfriends, seeing as how her parents would arrange a marriage partnership for her at some point in the future, but Chase was already betrothed and he had a girlfriend . . . Prim saw no reason why she couldn’t have a couple of boyfriends or three, herself, when she had no betrothee waiting in the wings at all.  And if she had no boyfriends, at least she had a healthy imagination.

When her mother did present someone to her, she hoped it would be somebody as fun and funny as Connor.  He was her favorite boyfriend right now.  Even if he did have a stupid thing for her cousin’s girlfriend.  He wasn’t her only boyfriend, of course.  She presently claimed three, all with different qualities that she considered valuable.  Elf would always be her first.  He was so clever and kind that she had fancied him from the first time she met him.  Third, of course, was Ashby.  He was big and sporty and powerful and she couldn’t help finding that attractive, even if he was as old as dirt and not especially nice.  Maybe some day Chase would let her spend a little time with Ashby.

At any rate, this afternoon was her date with Connor in the music room.  Primrose had hurried down and begun to warm up on her cello as quick as she could after class, so that when Connor came in and spoke to her, she was already getting into a piece that she’d done for a recital last summer.  It sounded much more complicated than it actually was, which made it ideal for showing off.  She smiled up at him and continued through the piece until the end, finishing with a dainty flourish of her bow.  Prim tipped her head in and pointed with her bow at the piano bench next as she stood up and laid her cello carefully aside.  She patted the bench and waved to Connor to join her on it as she sat down to play.
