Miriam's time of unconsciousness left her sad and gloomy.

At first, she wasn't sure what had happened. Then, her face and neck hurt. And then, she opened her eyes to see Peter Abernethy hoovering over her. "I'm so sorry, Miriam!" he said quietly. "I think I got a little carried away and thought I'd try to go ahead and end the duel so you could sit down. Guess that didn't work out so well. Please don't hate me."

Miriam's eyebrows furrowed and her eyes squinted. She inhaled, but not without moderate pain. She closed her eyes again. "Not again," she muttered weakly, "no dueling."
