When Damon Burke had a problem, his mum and dad had taught him to solve it quickly and quietly by himself. There was no complaining, crying for help, or waiting for it to go away. He did not have what he wanted because he did not do what he wanted. Thus, Damon Burke learned to do, to cast spells untrained and to solve problem unmet. As a result, he was a confident dueler. He had thick skin and a particular enjoyment in causing pain in others. Furthermore, he had two problems:

Elliot Haddock was conscious, and Damon Burke had no points.

With that thought, he took his position on the dueling mat and prepared himself to solve this problem quickly and quietly by himself. He hoped to make his mum and dad proud.

Despite this confident attitude of victory, Damon Burke genuinely admired Elliot Haddock. He was Ravenclaw's Quidditch captain and, with the Slytherin v. Ravenclaw match approaching, it was true that such a duel was not without its air of rivalry. However, despite all of that, Damon actually had a particular fondness for the bird boy. Elliot had spunk and grit which made him an admirable Quidditch player and, although Damon didn't want to admit it, likely an admirable wizard as well.

"Ready?"
Damon tightened his grip on his wand and wet his lips.
"Go!"

With lightning reflexes and no hint of fear, Damon quickly jabbed his wand forward in a forceful swish, throwing his magic and his voice into a firm, "Confundo!"
