Oh dear. This wasn't going well. What do you say to a girl you've just accidentally knocked unconscious? Especially when she's very small and pretty timid?

Peter sighed. This was going to be tricky.

Not again," she muttered weakly, "no dueling."

"No, no, we're not going to try to duel anymore tonight. Don't worry about that, Miriam. How're you feeling? Pretty rotten I expect." He took out his wand and looked at it. "Guess I should be more careful with this thing. Truly, Miriam, I was just trying to disarm you, not hurt you...."

He trailed off. Maybe he should talk about something else so she wouldn't focus on how it felt. He quickly put the offending wand away again. He hoped she wouldn't cry. If she started crying he might panic and bolt.

"So what kinds of things do you actually like to do?" he asked, trying to smile at the white-faced girl with the big eyes.
