"Are you sure it's numb enough?"
That was a curious question to ask an Auror. After going through everything he had since he finished his education at Hogwarts, everything was numb for Jack with or without the potions. Being an Auror meant a wizard had to develop amazing coping skills or just become numb to it all…which was a form of coping…or lack thereof. To see the sort of violence and to engage in it yourself meant not feeling the sting of conscience or pain. Everyone had felt it, Aurors, Healers, and Quidditch-moms, and everyone had a way of coping. Well, JT had decided on a sort of numbness that allowed him to shove it all aside and move on. Why dwell on the pain since it would only hinder his work? That’s the only reason he made regular visits to St. Mungos; constant pain could lead to desperate, emotional reactions and that’s not something he wanted to experience. He was trained to take care of that and Jack sometimes did as he was told. This wasn't to say that he was some kind of robot...No, he just didn't see much point in being sad all of the time.
"This will also help against infection....drink it all,"
He took the potion but he wasn’t happy about it. It was probably best to just down it like a shot of cheap whiskey so that’s what he did, keeping an eye on Gabriel as he did so. A shiver ran up and down his spine and extended through his body for a brief second, making him want to slap the healer upside the head.
“None…But no news is good news, right?"
He knew there was no news since the man had been reported missing to the Aurors and even if they weren’t actively looking for him, they still kept tabs on the information. He hoped it wouldn’t turn into a discussion of the shortcomings of his office but he wouldn’t blame the man if he wanted to vent to him. It was a sticky wicket that Jack frankly had very little to do with so he simply nodded and muttered a, “Right.”
"Should be ready for me to close up in a few minutes,"
“Are you sure?” he asked, smiling ruefully, “because you can keep on torturing me with cotton balls and that foul smelling…stuff.” He wasn’t sure what to say…It probably wasn’t right of him to change the subject but it was difficult for him to think of anything helpful while his leg had wisps of smoke rising from it.
“I’m sure that’s gotta be tough for you and your family. There’s only so much I can do but if there’s anything I can do to help, you’ll let me know?” The smoking had stopped and Jack didn’t know what else he could say to sound sincere or helpful. He wasn’t too good with emotions.
