When the teams entered the pitch, they flew a couple of warm up laps all around the stadium, which gave the supporters in the stands an opportunity to see that they were, in fact, all actually on the pitch.  Once they descended into their positions around the starting circle, however, only the players could see each other – being in close proximity as they were.  In the eyes of the rest of the stadium, they had vanished.

Pete Watkins and Sioni Rhys ap Emerys shook hands in the center, their expressions solemn as Hooch admonished the players to play fair and fly carefully.  All around them seemed empty save for the reverberating noise of the other students.  Finally, Hooch blew the whistle and the Quaffle went flying up into the fog along with the Chasers, and the game was on.

First with hands on the ball was Max Westbrook, Hufflepuff Chaser.  He held it tight under his arm as he raced off toward the area where the hoops ought to be, though none of them could see them precisely.  He dodged a loose Bludger just in the nick of time, but Pete Watkins caught that Bludger with his bat right behind Westbrook and knocked it back up towards him.  Spinning away, Westbrook handed the Quaffle over to Shane Bell, Hufflepuff Chaser, who rocketed off in another direction.  He flew directly into the path of Caitlin Vennegoor of Hesselink, Gryffindor Chaser, who corrected in time to avoid a serious collision, though her knees knocked hard into Bell’s shoulder.

Nat Warwick, Gryffindor Chaser, was right on Vennegoor of Hesselink’s heels and swept in to take advantage of Bell’s wobbly grip, kicking the ball out from under his arm.  Nat didn’t catch the ball, but it flew high and struck Shanley Dunway, Hufflepuff Seeker, right in the face.  Warwick nearly struck her as well, following close behind, as did several other fliers in hot pursuit, but he managed to swerve away after the Quaffle, which was now plummeting to the floor of the pitch.  Once Warwick had retrieved it, he hurried off towards the Hufflepuff hoops, only to find himself face to face with Sioni Rhys ap Emerys.  Rhys ap Emerys was chasing a Bludger he’d spotted and batted it up in Warwick’s direction from below.  Warwick passed the Quaffle to Derek Grimm, Gryffindor Chaser, except that it wasn’t Grimm at all but rather TJ Scott, Hufflepuff Chaser, who caught it tight and dashed away in the opposite direction.

Scott barreled through the fog relatively unhindered until she crossed paths with Millie Skrumpkin, Gryffindor Seeker, who’d been darting after a glint of something she thought she’d seen.  Scott took her by surprise and the two tumbled in a mess of brooms and limbs for a moment, losing the Quaffle entirely by the time they’d righted themselves.  It was a good eleven minutes before Quaffle was found on the floor of the pitch and returned to the air where Derek Grimm, Gryffindor Chaser, took possession.  Amber Hall, Gryffindor Beater, followed close at his side, watching out for Bludgers as he moved the Quaffle down the pitch, the other players of both teams swarming in closer to their shadows.

Lindsay Ward-Darling, Hufflepuff Beater, almost collided with a Bludger but managed to bump it in Grimm’s direction, though Hall deflected it without too much trouble.  Before any of them had realized it, though, Grimm was face to face with Humphrey Skrumpkin, Hufflepuff’s Keeper, meaning that several players were in the scoring area with the Quaffle, and they scattered.  In the mess of players flying off, Grimm, with the Quaffle hidden deep under his arm, tucked it in through the hoop.  Cries of foul went every which way from the Hufflepuff team, but Hooch claimed the other Gryffindors had left the scoring area before Grimm put it in, and the goal was good.  The bell on the hoops had sounded and the students in the stands, knowing what that meant, even if they couldn’t see much, roared in approval or disappointment.

Watching this match appeared to be a peculiar sport.  The supporters could see shadows and hear voices and peculiar sounds and occasional whistles or the bells on the hoops, but they saw very little of actual play save that which occurred near the edges of the pitch.  In fact, the necessity of listening to know what was going on caused the stands to be much more quiet than usual.  Information was regularly provided to the commentator, who relayed it to the spectators, but this was delayed and didn’t always match what was really going on in the air.

As far as they players went, they all seemed to be learning as they played, developing their knack for identifying each other’s shadows and voices, some of them making odd sounds here and there – noises made by both teams.  They seemed to be flying slower than usual, making more mistakes, missing passes, letting the Quaffle fall to the pitch.  Time dragged on between goals, and Hooch sporadically called players for fouls when she could catch them at it.

Todd Maculric, Gryffindor’s Keeper, and Skrumpkin for Hufflepuff, managed to stop far more Quaffles than they let past, helped by the fact that the Chasers were moving far slower than their normal speed.  Hours went by, full of bumps and bruises and misses and, yes, even scoring.  Bell and Scott and Westbrook managed to put in two goals each for Hufflepuff, while the Gryffindor Chasers slotted nine more between them, hammering away at the hoops ever and over again.  Vennegoor of Hesselink got herself so turned around at one point, thanks to some nifty batting by Rhys ap Emerys and Ward-Darling, that she put the Quaffle through her own team’s hoops.  The favor was returned, however, when Westbrook made the same mistake in return half an hour later.

Another half hour had passed without any noticeable excitement when suddenly Warwick flew face first into the Hufflepuff goal post.  Somebody screamed.  His nose, apparently broken, bled profusely so that the dark mess covered the whole of his chin and on down to his neck.  The Quaffle went in, though, and, after a brief time out, the match went on.

Bell snuck another Quaffle past Maculric, and then Westbrook got two in, but Maculric, kicked Bells next attempt out of the way so hard that it cleared most of the pitch and Vennegoor of Hesselink was able to surprise Skrumpkin with one more goal.

The heavily filtered sun hovered low over the horizon, with little hope for an end to the match anywhere in sight and Madam Hooch blew her whistle, signaling for a fifteen minute break in the game.

 Gryffindor 130 / 100 Hufflepuff
