Amber was right.  Everybody wanted to be invisible on the pitch – or as near to it as possible.  But nobody liked for everyone else out there to be invisible as well.  It seemed so obvious that Pete didn’t bother to make any remark on her comment.  He just closed his eyes and wished it for a moment.

An unexpected voice spoke up, out of nowhere, and Pete jerked his head up.  He half expected it to be some random person who didn’t belong in the lockers just yet, but it turned out the voice really did belong to the coach it sounded like.  Josh Cloud.  And Coach Collier followed in right behind him, and Pete found himself straightening up to greet them.  He couldn’t be seen slumping in the lockers by the likes of these men when there was a match to win yet.

“Heya Coach,” he said.  A short lived fantasy emerged in his mind where Josh told them exactly the easy little trick they needed to sort this match out with a big win in no time.  Of course, Josh dashed that hope in the next instant, and Pete only jerked his thumb at Millie as he stood to approach Coach Collier.  Just from sitting a moment, his body was already getting stiff. Coach Collier, though, he knew how to sort that out, and Pete let him.  He nearly buckled at the knees at first, releasing a throaty grunt, but balanced himself out and concentrated on relaxing and breathing while Coach Collier worked on him.  He nodded silently at the advice about swinging the bat and, as Coach Collier finished up his spells, Pete had an idea.

“Coach, you wouldn’t know how to fix his face, would you?” Pete asked.  He nodded towards Nat where Caitlin was trying to comfort him nearby.  “I’d rather have him whole if I have a choice.”
