Scarlett Briar Little Miss UnafraidEmma Briar Primadonna Girl
They couldn’t even take a time out to nicely lie to her. Scarlett had been trying to get her feet in the proper place while the boys blathered behind her, looking out at where she was supposed to be aiming, tilting her bow this way and that as she tugged on the string a bit and tried to get a feel for what Robin Hood should have felt like. Only her two best friends were not interested in encouraging that at all.
"You look like you're going to hurt someone, probably yourself."
“Or you.” Will hinted heavily with a smirk, watching Nat push himself up off the ground and come over to take pity on her to show her how to pull back on the bow properly.
“You look like a little girl playing Robin Hood.”
Nigel commented as Nat’s hand covered hers, Scarlett turning to her much taller friend, with a smile that crept over her features as she tilted her head up at him. She really was extraordinarily happy to play playing Robin Hood, and grateful for the help, though she’d thought that Nat was going to show her how to pull the string to where it needed to be, instead he snatched his hand away as quickly as he’d placed it.
"And you're aiming way too low, The arrow will hit the ground long before it makes it to him. I'd think you didn't want to hit him"
“You should probably focus on getting your arms in position before you worry about the aim, because the angle you’re holding there might change while you’re pulling back. You being new and all. Once you practice a lot, you should be able to draw without wobbling all over the place.”
That was the problems with two teachers wasn’t it? Nat said to aim, Nigel said to work on her position before that. So she made an attempt at both, though Nat was still close to her, she tried to listen to everything Nigel was telling her, raising her arms up, and looking down the line of the arrow, trying to aim (and also not remove any chunks of her own flesh). But her eyes did glance from the Slytherin to Nat, and over again. And why she had a sudden case of nerves she didn’t know. Neither Nat or Nigel were particularly mean about something she couldn’t do well on her first try, but for some reason she felt the need to blush while she was being watched so closely. She let herself look to Nat one more time as she drew back the string for an actual shot at Nigel’s insistence that she could do it, and she fought down the unreasonable flustered feeling she felt tickling around somewhere in her tummy. She was tempted to Nat to back up, he was in her personal space but since he’d just been trying to show her how to do this, she held her tongue and took aim at the ‘Little Twirp”
The twang of the string sent the arrow out in front of her, but Nat had been right, she was a little low and also outside so she didn’t hit the target, she caught the poor child in the elbow, sending that soft tipped arrow into his funny bone. Scarlett put down the bow with wide eyes to cover her mouth with her other hand not quite knowing if she should laugh or not. But even if she wanted to be the good prefect, she couldn’t help a little smothered giggle.
Will stepped toward Nat to hold out her bow, wordlessly offering him his turn next. It seemed fair, if he was playing Little John he’d get a turn too. Though, now that she had shot at her target, Scarlett had thought that she’d lose that little shivery feeling in her gut. But that wasn’t to be, the girl moved to stand next to Nigel, chewing on her lower lip, she looked out at their targets laughing out toward the trees and then to Nigel and Nat and back at her hands that were playing with the knot she’d tied in Nat’s plain white shirt to make it fit around her hips. She tugged at the little tail of fabric, and sighed, and then tried to decide if she should say anything at all.
She’d liked shooting, she wanted to do it again…but really, she’d wanted to ask them something for a while now. It had started out as a sort of idiotic idea, she knew it, which was why she hadn’t asked yet. Mostly because she anticipated a reaction like the one she’d gotten when asked if she looked like a proper archer. Only, the thought of actually trying to do what she wanted to do was going to require a lot more effort. That made her bite her lip harder and stare even more intently at the shirt as she twisted it now in her fingers.
“Can I ask you two something?” Scarlett was already rolling her eyes at herself in an attempt at going back to a place where this didn’t matter at all. Frankly, she didn’t talk about her family very much. Though both boys with her had a tendency of weaseling things out of her when she didn’t want them out. But she looked up and tried not to bite clean through her lip for as much as she was bothering it.
“Do you think it’s easy to sneak into one of those fancy parties?” Her two friends were in fact a couple of experts on the subject of fancy parties after all. She knew their summer plans always included them, or trying to get out of them at least.
“Not even to go to it, I don’t need to talk to anyone. And it has to be something pureblooded.” She twisted her lips apologetically at Nigel. Not because she thought that he would be hurt or anything, but just in case. But that part of it was very important to her plan.
“I just want to...” Yes, what did she want to do?
“I just want to see something is all.” She finished lamely, shrugging her shoulders.
