Perhaps anybody else might have interpreted Alexander’s comment about his youngest brother as a compliment but Henri knew better. Trent was no longer on the good side of his brothers and that put her in a rather precarious place. She wasn’t sure if they would hold his bad behavior against her just purely by association or if they would consider her a separate issue…The latter seemed unlikely considering how little Purebloods cared for the notion of women’s autonomy. Which is why this conversation was so important. She had to prove that while Trent was capable of screwing up things for his family, Henri was quite apt at fixing them, or at least keeping things in order. Of course the way she would be doing that would be at the expense of Alexander’s happiness but as it was made perfectly clear to her, for Purebloods happiness was not important when it concerned love and marriage. The individual could be sacrificed for the success of the group.
Her heart beat quickened when he stopped in his tracks, obviously shaken by her words. This sort of reaction was not what she had expected. Alexander was known as being composed and calculating, not weak and sensitive. But apparently Henri had found a chink in his armor and she couldn’t have been happier. When he picked up his pace again, she exhaled a soft laugh, knowing that if she played her cards right then she would have him right where she wanted him…And that would be begging at her feet.
"Oh, you saw her too? Did you get a chance to talk to her? I didn't realize that you were friendly with her."
This time her laugh was much more audible and it couldn’t be missed by him as she continued to follow him, her hands clasped behind her back.
“I did see her,” she began, biting her lower lip as she smiled. She let some students pass them before she’d say anything. She would at least show him that courtesy.
Henri had never been friends with the other girl or at least not more than acquaintances and she wouldn’t pretend to be anything else. The girl had graduated and had made little of herself as far as she was concerned so what did she care if she had that connection? Alexander was a complete fool for throwing away what he had for a girl with no name or worth in their world.
“I didn’t have a chance to speak to her since she seemed rather busy,” she started again as soon as they were relatively alone. “What with your tongue down her throat and all.” A girlish giggle escaped her as she relived the moment when she’d seen the pair of them in the Three Broomsticks. She still couldn’t believe he had been so careless, so foolish.
“You really should be more careful, Holcombe,” she emphasized his name. “You never know who might be watching.”
