Max Westbrook Hufflepuff 1986 Book Binder and Tinkerer Believe in Possibility
Highly Strung
The fog was going to hurt Hufflepuff’s chances of winning, but Max was not entirely upset about it. After all, he could hardly see the others, so chances were that the hundreds of eyes in the stands couldn’t see him either. That made him feel more confident already. And he rather thought that Sioni’s plan was a good one. Of course, he felt that way about all of Sioni’s plans. He nodded along as their captain explained how they were going to be doing things, and he laughed as Shane started making ridiculous noises.
It was nice to see everyone so upbeat and positive. Something like this could easily get them down and depressed; he thought that would have a greater impact on their playing than the fog. He just hoped he didn’t do something stupid, like getting turned around on the pitch and trying to throw the Quaffle through their own goal posts. That would be soooooooo embarrassing. He’d probably have to drop out of school, become a hermit, and never show his face to anyone ever again. Or he could get that classic surchey thing the Muggles did and pretend he was someone else.
Hmmm. Best clarify a few things before starting… that would hopefully lessen his chances of messing things up and needing the surchey thingy. “Er, is it just Shane who’s making noises? What are we supposed to say?” he asked, indicating T.J. and himself. While he hated to contradict the captain, there seemed to be a glaringly obvious hole in the whole plan. “Are… are we going to use the same noises all match?” he asked, hesitantly. “I think they’ll figure it out. What if some Gryffindor shouts Ting-a-Ling or whatever to confuse us?” That’s what Max would do if he figured out the opponents’ plan.
"Shouldn't we... switch things up a bit?"

Their side was split between worry and laughter. There was a good reason to worry after all, if the fog was any thicker it would choke them as soon as they breathed it in, Sioni’s plan of Shane yelling noises was quickly turning into the whole chaser line up sounding off every time one of them had the quaffle. Logically Shane knew that this plan wouldn’t last but all of five seconds, and already every time Shane had snickered and yelled the sound, Lindsay giggled, so at least everyone would know where the two of them were at. For a few minutes they just pretended like the Gryffindors were going to let them fly about yelling signals at each other, it made the Hufflepuff line laugh, well, until Max was saying what the rest of them were thinking.
“Hey, if you want the bludgers sent blindly in your direction, you’re more than welcome.” Shane squeezed T.J’s shoulder since his arm was looped around it, though his words were for Max. But he’d let Sioni answer all those other questions, currently Shane was intent on being blinded by his Captain’s optimism and planning his own funeral with Shay.
Shane looked out at the doors that would lead to the pitch, and felt just a little of that jovial feeling start to edge off. The dark haired boy sincerely hoped that he was only joking when he talked about his poor form being a crumpled heap on the pitch.
“Hey, Shay?” He tried to get her attention one last time.
“How about some more of those yellow roses, Valentine?” He flashed her smile. “You know, at my funeral?”

Not Getting Any Younger
As his team lined up at the door, Sioni found himself smiling. They were all trying to get their head around his crazy scheme and, because of that, weren’t worrying too much about the fog. Sioni would do the worrying about that. But the mood was different. Lighter. Then T.J piped up.
"You know, we probably should have started eyes closed practices much sooner."
Sioni snorted but reached over to give the blonde a pat on the shoulder. “You’re right there, fach. But, ‘cause we haven’t, like, I’ll let you keep your eyes open, just in case you can see anything, like.”
He turned at the door and looked back down the double line of players. “Max is right. The rest of you, say any bloody think you like up there. Random, like. Only Shane does bell noises. The rest of you …. I don’t know., Honk like geese. Cheer. Whistle. Anything. At the very least we’ll have Gryffindor laughing so much they’ll miss their passes. And if they miss one goal because of that, and we win, it will be worth it. So let’s go have fun, like, and win this thing!”

Anna-Marie went about getting her boys comfortable as she could in the stands. They were wet from the low clouds, but Deacon seemed happy enough to stand next to her and hang onto her coat with his gloved hands, while Seth played with one of the buttons on her jacket, trying without success to bring that shiny thing to his mouth now. It seemed that everything belonged there, including his own fingers, which he’d successfully gotten passed his lips by muscling around his coat, only to have them promptly pulled out with an audible pop from between his lips when he relaxed again.
"I really hope they don't lose. I don't know how much she could handle it if they lost again."
The blond nodded, Jeremy had told her how hard his sister had taken the last loss, no one liked to be at the bottom of the ladder when it came to Quidditch, especially when you were leaving your heart on the field at the end of it.
“They won’t loose, I don’t think Shay would allow it.” Anna-Marie quipped with a smile, making sure to put a hand at the back of her toddler to be sure that he wasn’t going to fall while he was shifting from foot to foot on the bench.
"I hope it starts soon, though. I just don't want the boys to get bored or tired or cold. "
“Cold can be spelled away, I brought a few things for the boys in my bag to play with and they can sleep if they get tired.” No, those things didn’t seem like anything to worry about to her. But she did add with a cheeky grin to Jeremy, “But you know, your sister won’t be able to tell if you are here or not as long as this doesn’t burn off. We could go for tea and she’ll never be the wiser...”

There were times when Nat was a kind of a nuisance. Like when he was teasing her for being the youngest player on the team. Well, Q.E.D. Nobody likes being teased. But other times he was kind of like a stupid older brother, and that was today.
"Don't worry Skrump-ette. You'll get it. Pete's right. You're ready for this. You're like twelve, and the best seeker I can name."
Milly aimed a kick at Nat’s shin and missed. “Thirteen,” She growled. “And you know it.”
He smirked, holding his broom over one shoulder. "If that's not enough, you're way smaller than Dunway. Just wait for someone to accidentally hit a bludger at her.
“Oh, I know I’m good enough,” Said Millie, though sometimes she didn’t feel so sure. “But being small isn’t going to matter. Except for maybe staying alive. But I might as well just fly around in circles with both hands sticking out with my eyes shut and hope that one of them runs into the Snitch.” She harrumphed but leaned against Nat anyway. “I’ll tell you what. IF I catch the Snitch, you have to tell your stupid friend Nigel not to be a total wimp. My brother is more of a man than him.” She though a minute and added, “There are first years more grown up.”

When Sioni had explained his plan, Skrumpkin thought it was a joke at firs. But then he saw the point. Any kind of communication in the fog would help the Beaters and the Chasers, and if he heard a voice he knew, it would tell him where the play was. Q.E.D. And he could see why he should keep quiet. The last thing he wanted to do was lead the Gryffs toward him. Better they should get lost completely and crash into the stands.
Still, he felt a little left out of things, until Sioni gave the nod, and led the way out onto the pitch. Suddenly the idea struck him.
“When I say, Ding-dong, you say Ting-a-ling,” He shouted from the back. “Ding-dong!” At the head of the team he heard Sioni bark with laughter. “Ting-a-Ling,” Came back Sioni’s voice. "Ding-Dong!" Shouted Skrumpkin, even louder.
