Max Westbrook Hufflepuff 1986 Book Binder and Tinkerer Believe in Possibility
Highly Strung
Oh, good. T.J. had a plan. Even if her plan was terribly terrible, he’d take it. Any plan was better than no plan, and he had no plan. He listened, wide-eyed, while she explained her plan. Such as it was. “I’m not panicking,” he said, his voice a whole octave higher than normal. He coughed a little, cleared his throat, and repeated, “I’m not panicking,” in as deep a voice as he could manage. See? Not panicking. Okay… so that was a slight lie. But he could stop! Anytime he wanted to… He really could. Taking several deep breaths, he managed a slightly crooked, somewhat wavery smile.
Her confidence was helping, though. She clearly believed in her plan, so maybe he should believe in it, too. Right? He wanted to be confident. He wanted to win. He just… didn’t know if they could. They were severely handicapped without Shane. They could probably make a few goals between them, but… he wasn’t really feeling that good about their chances. Nodding, he said, “I’ll try to pull it together.” He was aware of the fact that if they embarrassed themselves, it’d most likely be his fault.
Remounting his broom, he kicked back up and did a couple of loop-de-loops to relax. It didn’t really help. “Close, fast, avoid Gryffindors,” he muttered to himself. “Close, fast, no Gryffindors…” He could do that. It would be just like normal… except without Shane in the middle. Max would have to remember to not to pass to him… seeing as he wouldn’t be there to catch it, and that violated T.J.’s third rule. Despite T.J.’s pep talk, it was just not fair. There were three Gryffindor Chasers to their pitiful two, and no matter how Max flew, there was always someone to cut him off and steal the Quaffle from him. They were just not evenly matched.
He hated to be vengeful or stoop to their level, but… “Somebody knock them off their bloody brooms!” he shouted, after he had been sandwiched in by two of the Gryffindors and had nearly fallen off his own broom fighting to keep the Quaffle. He had lost that fight, but he had stayed on the broom… to fight another day, he supposed. “Come on,” he roared at a passing Beater. He would prefer to lose that mouthy Watkins, but the other freakishly tall one would be helpful, too. The tall one looked like he was barely hanging in there, anyway… how much could it take to put him out of the game?
At least then Hufflepuff might have a chance…

Not Getting Any Younger
The fog was lifting a little, maybe being burnt off by the torches. That made it easier, at times to see, but the shadows and the patchiness didn’t help a bit. The only thing that cheered Sioni was the hope that Shanty-town would be able to see the Snitch easier. Because the match rode on her more than ever. Everybody knew it was the Seekers won the game, like. And more often than not, it was true; the team with the better… or luckier… Seeker won. And Sioni was sure that in a straight flying contest, Shanley could top Skrumpkin’s sister. But nothing in Quidditch was straight.
As if to prove it, Shane was out of the game. During the time out, Sioni sprinted over to Lindsay. “Right, we’re going to have to ride herd on Max and T.J., see? We haven’t done this in a while, but we got no choice, is it? You take right flank I’ll take Left. Keep the Bludgers off and don’t worry about the rest.” He paused and shook the knots out of his neck.
When Gryffindor have the Quaffle, I want you to dive bomb them and give them as much trouble as you can. If you see a Bludger, use it. But if there isn’t one handy, be your own Bludger. We have to break up their formation.”
He reached over and patted her shoulder. “Right, partner, let’s go give ‘em Hell.”

This was impossible. Not only were they outnumbered, they still couldn’t see very well, and everyone’s tempers were flaring. Including his own, though he knew it wouldn’t help matters. He couldn’t help it. It was incredibly frustrating to be always losing the Quaffle, and he could not get himself calmed down. Every time he tried to breathe and relax, someone checked him again, and he got irritated all over again. And people yelling at him made him want to yell back, and… it was just not good. Not good.
“We could make a goal if we could hold onto the Quaffle long enough,” retorted Max, before he could stop himself. It wasn’t the visibility factor that was hurting the Chasers, so much as the fact that they were all off-kilter with the loss of their middleman and outnumbered. “Stop yelling at us,” he yelled. “It’s only distracting us! You focus on your job and let us do ours!”
Granted, it would be easier for them to do their job if the conditions were better, but it was unlikely that conditions would improve before this match was over. If it ever was… and Max was starting to feel like that was a rather big if. Okay. It was time to be a united front. A lean, mean, Hufflepuff machine. It was time to bolster spirits. It was time to start chanting. “I fly for Hufflepuff,” he roared, tossing the Quaffle to T.J. as the Gryffindor Chasers closed in on him. “For Hufflepuff I fly! And when you fly for Hufflepuff, you never say die! Never say die!”

They had played well. There was no doubt about that. Even under normal circumstances it would have been a hard fought match and it was anything but normal circumstances. So there should have been some comfort in that, like. For Sioni, though, there was no comfort, no solace. Just the dead feeling of having failed.
And for once he didn’t feel like telling his team to pick themselves up and be proud of what they had done. And mercifully he could leave that until later. Right now, with the Gryffindors patting themselves on the back, he was interested in only one thing: Shanley. As soon as the whistle had been blown and before the fatal words “Gryffindor wins!” had been shouted, Sioni was on the ground and racing toward the two crumpled figures at Madam Hooch’s feet. He must have been more tired than he had admitted, though, because he was passed by Skrumpkin, running flat out and skidding to a halt beside his sister. Millie’s eyes were open when Sioni got there, and he didn’t give her much more than a glance. Kneeling heavily he checked Shanley for signs of broken bones and bleeding. Finding none he cradled her head on his lap and brushed her hair from her forehead as gently as his gauntlets would allow. Two black eyes was the least she could expect, and chances were Madam Pomfrey would have two broken noses to see to that evening. That was normal for a good Quidditch match, though. What frightened Sioni was how still his teammate was.
“Shanty town? Are you alright, fach?”

Millie could turn and Millie could dive and Millie could move the broom under her like it was part of her. The one thing Millie couldn’t do was see. But when it came to it, she had seen well enough, and nothing was going to stop her getting her hands on that Snitch. But between the elbows and the brooms and the Bludgers and bloody Hufflepuff’s girl getting in the way, she lost it.
And then there it was!
As far as Millie could remember, she didn’t actually fly to get the Snitch, she threw herself bodily at it, and the Broomstick just kind of came along for the ride. She had her hand out, she could remember that much, and then everything when yellow and them red and then she couldn’t remember. Only getting the wind knocked out of her, so she couldn’t breathe. And it was quiet. Or maybe it was noisy but she couldn’t hear, except for the kind of whistling in her ears. Or hissing. Or something. Crickets. It sounded like millions of crickets and she didn’t know where they’d come from. But she had something she wanted in her hand; she remembered that she’d got it.
“Ow,” Said Millie, in case anyone was interested.
“Gryffindor wins!”
They did? Someone must have caught the Snitch then!
And all at once the whistling and the noises and the shouting all came together and her face felt like someone had kicked her. And Hooch was asking how she was and Captain Peter was asking how she was and she couldn’t say anything because she could feel the little wings of the Snitch still trembling between her fingers and if she said anything she would just burst into tears.
Besides, her lip was split.
And then she might as well talk, because she was crying anyway. Q.E.D.
“I go- I go- I got it” She gulped. “I got it.” But for some stupid reason she couldn’t stop crying.
