Gloria’s Ravenclaw curiosity got the better of her. At first she wasn’t going to go. She’d asked among some of her friends and the giggling reactions had put her off the idea immediately. Apparently the single rose from an anonymous source who wanted to meet her at the Trophy Room had every possibility of being from a boy who fancied her. This was a prospect that Gloria didn’t know how to make sense of. Boys themselves were not an issue for her. Meeting a boy alone, in private, was not even a big thing, really, under ordinary circumstances. But the idea that he might have some mysterious designs on her was enough to have her practically doubled over with stress. And then there was the natural discussion of WHO might have sent it. Was it a practical joke from one of the boys in her year who liked to tease her so mercilessly? Or was it from somebody who was really nice and maybe even . . . well, she refused to let herself dwell on that. There was also a possibility, according to Lisette, that it was from a person who wanted to murder her, which was slightly less frightening. She did have that Tickling Hex, after all. If this appointment had been two weeks away, Gloria would have owled her mother for advice. There wasn’t time enough for that, however, and she insisted all day that she wasn’t going to go at all until the very last minute when, sitting at the end of dinner, Gloria whispered to Lisette that she thought she would go see who it was from if Lisette would go with her. “If we can just peek in and find out who it is without them seeing us, then we can decide whether to go in or not,” she explained to Lisette. They were making their way down the corridor with just a few minutes to spare. Gloria cracked open a likely looking door which made a lot of noise and turned out to be a classroom she’d never visited. Gloria had never been to the Trophy Room, and had only the vaguest directions on how to get there, so she rather hoped they didn’t wind up completely lost in this part of the castle. She pulled the classroom door shut, with even more noise echoing around the corridor. “But you have to promise not to leave me alone, okay?” she whispered to Lisette. “Will you pinky swear?” ![]() Gloria Watkins
