In Potions class, Joel and Tucker were not allowed to sit by eachother anymore. This was not Potions class, however. It was Charms, and they’d sat together today, right behind Maisie, whose quill kept jumping around her desk at odd times. When it sprayed a trail of ink across the room and all over Professor Flitwick’s face by accident, it was time for Joel and Tucker – neither of whom looked very innocent – to be separated. At the professor’s bidding, Joel stuffed his parchments into his text book and clamped it closed and piled the ink well and quills on top of it and hoisted it all into his arms as he stood, grabbing his bag from the floor with his other hand. It a little awkward, but it was only supposed to be a short trip across the room. He glanced over in Hadley’s direction. She was the good girl who he was supposed to sit by – presumably she would keep him well behaved. Joel was about half way to her when he noticed the giggling. It was coming from more than one desk, and girls all round the room were looking at him from behind their silky hair and fluffy quills. He cautiously hefted his school bag a little higher in front of him as he walked, wondering if he’d forgotten to button his trousers. He heard somebody whisper “Here he comes!” and he almost stopped dead in his tracks. Somehow Joel made it into the seat beside Hadley, sliding his armful onto the desk. “Hey,” he whispered. Joel didn’t like feeling so awash with self-consciousness. He wondered if flicking somebody’s quill was really so remarkable that they all felt bad for Hadley at this moment, or whether there was something wrong with him. “My brother didn’t put a kick me sign on my back, did he?” ![]() JOEL WATKINS
