Not Getting Any Younger
If there was one characteristic of Ava’s that thrilled ffleurbert more than her kissing skills, it was her ability to make him feel smart. Almost everything he said she agreed with, and somehow managed to make it seem like let fall some gem of truth. Though, if he’d really thought about it he would have realized that his little bunny was being difficult. She simply wouldn’t tell him anything about herself!
“So…you and Skrumph have been friends for a while then, right? Even before Hogwarts?”
“Oh, rather!” Said ffleurbert, happily thrown back into childhood memories. “We were in the same prep school. Of course, the Mater said that Skrumpkin’s dad was nothing but a trumped-up butcher, but really, old Lionel is pretty bright, once you get to talkin’ with him. And you don’t make the pile he has by being stupid.” He stopped, realizing he’d lost what tenuous grip he’d had on the thread.
“Well, let’s see… right, Skrumph and I were at St. Elmo’s together. Not the most likely pair to hit it off, you might think, but… well, truth be told, I recognized that he was a wizard before he knew himself. Muggle-born, of course, so he hadn’t a clue why stuff kept happinin’. I spotted it in Rugger one day, how the bigger lads kept bouncing off him, I mean, he’s always been big, but he wasn’t that big then.”
He paused a bit thinking back to when he, a seven year old, explained to his friend that he was a wizard, and had to have the Mater do a little magic to prove to the Skrumpkins that magic was real.
“Anyway, that’s when we started doing things together. Came as a bit of a shock when we were sorted into different houses. Still chums, though. You can’t go through St. Elmo’s prunes together without bonding, don’tcher know.”
Once again ffleurbert tried to turn the conversation back to Ava.
“Where did you go to school? I mean before..” He waved his hand to indicate the spot where they were sitting and the whole of Hogwarts. “I mean, I don’t know whether you are an old pureblood family or a Muggle-born like old Skrumph.” He smiled innocently, because of course it really didn’t matter to him a whit.
Not when she made him feel so good. Who cared who her father was?

“And you’re still friends. That’s…sweet. Adorable.”
Ava had this strange habit of putting on a little kid’s voice that puzzled ffleurbert. It was sweet and kind of silly, and he liked it, but he didn’t understand it.
It must be a girl thing.
“Well, I don’t know about adorable,” He answered cheerfully. “But, you know…. Friends.” After all, there was her cousin and brother and all. Though just what the ‘and all’ consisted of, he didn’t know.
“Probably something we should know since we’re dating.”
“Probabaly.”
“I went to a local muggle school,”
Ffleurbert nodded. “St. Elmo’s was mostly Muggle. Well, everybody but me and Skrumph, actually!”
“With my brother and cousin. Theo and my aunt and uncle live just down the street from us.”
“Ah! So they are like … kind of old school friends, only family. And your aunty lived down the street?” Fascinating. Like Coronation Street on the Muggle telly, really.
“Where was this? Trewin is a Cornish name, but you don’t sound Cornish. More Irish, don’tcher know? (Which is delightful, I may say.) My nearest aunt lives in… Well, London, I suppose. Though there’s also Uncle Charles in Arundel. He’s a bachelor. The Mater’s youngest brother and as bent as a paperclip.” He smiled happily. Ffleurbert liked Uncle Charles as much as he liked any of his family. “I have erm… three cousins? I think?” he shrugged. “Hardly ever see ‘em. So.. I suppose as far as close friends go, there’s Skrumpkin and Millie… and well. You, really.” And with that ffleurbert kissed her.

It had taken a bit of digging, but at last ffleurbert felt like he was getting to know the real Ava. Something of an extended family, then. Well, that fit all the stereotypes of the Irish that he knew, so it seemed t make sense. Just as in the same way his family was, by and large, a bit remote and aloof. As you would expect from an English ‘County’ family.
Which meant that the Mater would want to know who Ava’s ‘People’ were, and he could happily tell her: No Body In Particular.
Which might not make her particularly happy, but pleased ffleurbert himself no end.
“Along the outskirts, close to the country but not quite there.”
“I fear we would count as well and truly country,” Said ffleurbert cheerfully. “But then, it’s hard to keep a stable in town.”
“I think I spend more time at Theo’s than I do my home.”
Ffleurbert gave his nose a scratch. “I have been over to Skrumpkin’s place… but .. Well, I suppose because we have more room, he usually comes over to us. And of course, Millie hangs around the stables, so it’s easier to have them both over.” He mused about the Skrumpkin’s house: a renovated tithe-barn with a two car garage built alongside. Roomy was the best word he could think of. But seriously lacking in secret passages, hidden rooms and climbable roof-space.
“So what do you get up to at Theo’s, then? There was always a certain amount of climbing and falling out of trees in your younger days, and going on safari in the old hazel coppice. Thinking back I guess that’s where I picked up my lurking skills, don’tcher know?” This idea resulted iin a squeeze and a kiss for Ava, out of pure enthusiasm.
“You really must come down sometime over the Hols. Do you suppose your mother would let you visit?”

“And why would you fear that?” she asked him, more than happy to ask the questions rather than be the one asked. “Nothing wrong with the – wait a second…you have horses?”
“Er, what?” ffleurbert never noticed that he said some of those things. Manner of speaking, in a manner of speaking.
“Oh, well, the stables, yes.” He said, a bit off hand. He didn’t go there much. “I don’t have a horse. Can’t ride all that well, if the truth be known. But the Mater is mad keen. She breeds them, don’tcher know. And she boards one or two other people’s. Millie keeps her pony there, f’rinstance. And there are stable-girls all over the place. Local girls, mostly, you know, do the mucking out and cleaning the tack and all of that, and exercise the horses. The Mater gives ‘em ridin’ lessons in exchange and that.” He shrugged. The horses were more of a fact of life to ffleurbert than a special thing in any way. They had cars, too, for “Muggle Days” and he didn’t really think about them either.
They had broomsticks he didn’t think about, come to that.
There were any number of things in ffleurbert’s house he didn’t think about, really. Until now, when he was telling Ava about them. This made him oddly happy.
Ava was talking about her cousin’s place. “They have a pond that we play in…we go for walks…play at the beach….”
“Oh splendid!” This was more theoretical than due to experience. Sometimes ffleurbert had gone to the sea side. But since it was more likely to be with his Nanny than his parents, ffleurbert didn’t rate it as very interesting.
“So…Millie, you close to her?” she asked, changing the subject again.
“Close? Well, that depends on what you mean by close. I’ve known her since she was.. what? Five? Six? I mean when Skrumpkin started at St. Elmo’s she used to tag along when he came over to play. That’s when she got the horse bug, I think. But you know. Little Sister kind of thing? She’s alright, and of course, we’re in the same house. But she’s mad keen on Quidditch, of course, and like I said, I really don’t …” He trailed off, a thought striking him.
“I say, you’re not jealous are you?” He found the thought that Ava might be jealous of Millie both ridiculous and marvelously flattering.
