Professor Flitwick always made a point of being in the classroom waiting when the students arrived. It saved the embarrassment of climbing up onto his rostrum while they were watching, for a start, and it also gave him a chance to see who was eager to be there, who came in last, and who had formed the latest couples. This last observation was especially important in the last year of the OWL’s class, as there was a fine art to deciding who should be allowed to work as in pairs and who were better off (educationally speaking) separated. It all came down to whether the girl was in charge, of course.
As the last stragglers rushed into the room, Fillius swished his wand toward the door, snapping it shut. “Alright, settle down, settle down, everyone.” As Joel Watkins pushed himself into the seat next to Avaline Trewin the Professor made a mental to pair Ava with another girl when it came time.
“If you would be so kind as to banish your homework into the basket in front of my desk, we’ll get on with today’s rather interesting problem.”
As the scrolls flew across the room with more or less accuracy the old Wizard reached behind his podium and brought out a glass globe, which he set floating in the middle of the room with the flick/swish of Wingardium Leviosa.
“I though after Monday’s somewhat vigorous Incarcerous, we would focus on something
a bit more light-hearted today. As you see, I have a rather nice little glass
bauble floating there… and I would thank you not to even consider hexing it,
Joel, so put down your wand until I’m finished. Lizzie, I think Tucker might
need his hand back. Right.”
The globe suddenly blazed with a golden light, which slowly turned orange and
then red, and further though all the colors of the spectrum.
“Two simultaneous charms, along with Wingardium, as you can see. First a simple illumination charm, and then a color charm. Actually there are six separate color charms, each replacing the last in an endless circle. You will be trying to do this with just two colors today, though there will of course be extra credit for anyone who can manage three. Adam, if you would be so kind as to pass out the baubles you will find in the chest over there? And could you put Nancy’s scroll in the homework basket? Thank you.”
As the glass balls were handed out Fillius continued, “We’ll warm up with our old friend Wingardium Leviosa, to get the balls airborne, and then see if you can get them illuminated. White or blue light, whichever is easier for you.”
(Post in of course. Posts mean POINTS!)
