Physical Description:
Skyla is not one that could ever be thought of as beautiful upon first glance. She possesses neither a pale, delicate loveliness nor a dark, alluring beauty.
She just is what she is. That's not to say that she is ugly. It is just that her physical features are more of an acquired taste. In her own eyes, she is
painfully average.
Skyla stands at about 5'7", a little on the tall side for a girl. She is fairly thin, weighing in at about 118 pounds, give or take. She is not
completely flat-chested, but her breasts are not as large as she'd like, and her hips, while noticeable, are slight, just like the rest of her. She keeps
her girlish figure by eating like a bird. She's deathly afraid of gaining weight, so a stray pound or two is enough to make her panic.
Skyla has straight, dark brown hair that she keeps neatly clipped just an inch below her shoulders. In school, she used to wear it down all the time, but since
leaving school she's taken to wearing it up most of the time, mostly to keep it out of her face while she works. Given her dark hair, her eyes are of a
startlingly light blue color, with silvery flecks scattered throughout. However, one can only notice the greyish tinge to her eyes if they get close to her,
and very few people have gotten that close to her, ever.
She has high cheekbones that could cut glass and a sharp, pointed chin. Her nose is longer than she'd like. Her lips are full, yet nothing special all the
same. After Hogwarts, she broke down and started wearing makeup regularly. A bit of mascara, eyeliner, and some lipstick defines her daily makeup routine. Her
fingers are long, thin, and graceful-looking; she has the hands of a pianist. Her fingernails, which she obsessively files into perfect ovals, are usually
painted some variation of red. Skyla is a bookworm and an intellectual, not to mention she works in an office, and it shows in her complexion. Her skin is
ghostly pale. There is not much hope of it ever reaching a color darker than light beige, for if she spends too much time outside on a sunny day, she ends up
horribly burned in salute to her British and French Canadian heritage.
In her clothing, she favors intense colors. Black, blue, red, and green make up the majority of the hues included in her wardrobe. She
rarely wears trousers, preferring skirts and dresses to trousers. Her mother kept her in 'girly' clothing as a child, and while she isn't your
typical girly-girl, she is quite feminine and prefers to look it. Hence the reason why one will almost never see her in trousers. However, she is still very
modest. One will seldom see plunging v-neck dresses/shirts or ridiculously short skirts gracing her frame. No, her skirts and dresses all fall to knee length
or longer, and most of her shirts are either button up or have a conservative neckline. On the rare occasion she does wear something that would qualify as
sexy, it is usually only to please a significant other.
Personality Description:
Skyla has never been an overly social person. She's not anti-social, per se. She just doesn't seek out the company of others as a general
rule. However, she can get along fine in a small group of three to four people. Any larger than that and she becomes uncomfortable, withdrawing into herself
and taking a back seat to the others in the group. Most people annoy the hell out of her. Having to deal extensively with people leaves her snippy and annoyed.
Luckily she works mostly with manuscripts so she doesn't have to spend a lot of time with people.
Skyla is overall a quiet sort of person. That doesn't mean she is shy. She doesn't like to waste words and she hates mindless chatter. She has no trouble telling it like it is. If she doesn't like you, you'll find out as soon as you say something stupid. Intelligent discussion and debate are two things in which she will participate and actually enjoy. She knows a lot of random trivia because she is a huge bookworm. Every week she is reading a new book, it seems. She's quite serious and it's obvious just from looking at her. Her demeanor and the way she carries herself speaks of someone who is serious and mature. She does know how to relax, though most people don't see her relaxed side. It's rare that she shows it, and when she does, it's with someone she trusts; those people are few and far between.
Skyla is not lazy at all; in fact, she is a very hard worker. She's a capable, resourceful-- and most of all-- an ambitious woman. Within the next ten years she hopes to become head of Germanus Publications, or move onto a better publishing company like Obscurus Books if afforded the chance. She's talented and extremely clever as well as exceedingly modest about her achievements. She's never been one to blow her own horn. Compliments are something she has a hard time accepting, whether they are about her physical appearance (mostly she thinks whoever is giving the compliment is mocking her) or her intelligence.
She comes off as cold and bitchy a lot of the time. It's mostly true, even if she has softened up a little in the year since
she's left school. The only reason she acts like that is because she's been rejected so many times that she's wary of allowing people to get close
to her. However, if one is able to break past her defenses, they'd find themselves an interesting young woman with a lot to offer.
Brief History:
The Reese line was an old, prominent Canadian pureblood line dating back to the twelfth century, where it originated in Cornwall before one branch of the
family emigrated from England to Nova Scotia in the early nineteenth century. Catherine Reese was an attractive, yet unwanted only child of Cassandra and Quinn
Reese. She didn't come along until six years into the couples' marriage, though that's not to say they didn't try. They tried and tried to
conceive an heir, and after many years waiting, the news that Cassandra was finally with child relieved the entire family. Without an heir, the Canadian Reese
line would die with Quinn, and they simply could not have that.
After Catherine was born, the Healers told Cassandra that she would never have another child. The Reeses were devastated. They determined that their daughter would marry none but the best of the best, for it would be a great honor for any pureblood to marry into the Reese household. When the girl reached nineteen years of age, it was decided that she would be married to a wealthy American pureblood wizard. The engagement was expected to last a year before the wedding.
However, that is not the way things turned out. Six months into her engagement, she met a man named Eric Davenport, a twenty-one-year-old British Muggle on holiday, visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia, where his sister lived. The young man managed to capture her interest, and she spent every day of his holiday with him. He even extended his stay for an extra two weeks past the month he had originally intended to stay. At the end of his stay, Catherine fancied herself in love with him and decided to run away with him.
Eric brought his new bride back to his hometown of Liverpool, England. It was there they made their home, and for two and a half years had a relatively happy marriage. It was only after their daughter, Skyla, was born on an overly warm day in June of 1960 that things began to go downhill. When her younger brother, Jeremiah, was brought into the world the following September, things got even worse.
It was during this time period, around the time the children were born, that Eric became more and more abusive toward his family. After Jeremiah's birth, Catherine deeply regretted ever looking twice at the man she knew as her husband; however, she was too emotionally weak to leave. There was nowhere for her to go, no one to whom she could turn. And so she was stuck in a loveless marriage with two young children who would grow up to bear the scars of their upbringing.
Skyla's childhood was not what anyone would call happy. She and her brother fought bitterly for the attention of their depressed mother and emotionally distant father. They had a strict, harsh, religious upbringing. Magic, in their household, was condemned as a sin by their father. Catherine never told her husband of her magical ability; in fact, she hid her wand away the day they got married, never to be looked at again until Skyla received her letter for Hogwarts. The fateful day that letter did arrive, though, was the day that changed Skyla's life forever.
When she received it and after her father had looked at it, he went completely ballistic. He despised magic as the devil's work and gave her an ultimatum: she could ignore the letter and continue with her schooling at her Catholic school. Or, she could go to Hogwarts and say goodbye to a semi-comfortable life in the Davenport home.
Obviously, she chose the latter. She was kicked out of her house and disowned by her father. Her mother did what she could to help the girl. That first summer before she attended Hogwarts, she was sent to summer camp in America, since she had no other place to go. She couldn't live with her father's family, for they were all exactly like him; she couldn't live with her mother's family because they wanted nothing to do with her, since she was tainted with Muggle blood. After that summer, she was sent off to Hogwarts and promptly sorted into Slytherin. It was a toss up between Ravenclaw and Slytherin, but Skyla wanted Slytherin more. After doing research on Salazar Slytherin, Skyla was shocked that she was able to get into the house Slytherin, for as far as she knew (at that point) she was a Muggleborn. Of course, she kept this all quiet, never really getting involved in discussions about blood purity and always dodging questions related to her family that were directed at her.
Over the next couple of years, she spent her summers at summer camps in America and her school years at Hogwarts. She kept the mystery of her bloodline a secret from her peers for years. The summer after her third year, when she was just fourteen, she got a job working in Flourish and Blott's. It was a boring job, but it was enough to pay her room and board at the Leaky Cauldron for that summer and every other summer after that.
During Christmas of her sixth year, her mother wrote her a long letter, explaining everything. Since then, Skyla has had to deal with the shocking revelation that she is, in fact, part of a magical family. Knowing that her mother's family is pureblooded is a great comfort to her. Anyone who asks about her family history will hear only of her mother's side and never her father's side.
She left Hogwarts a Prefect, achieving seven N.E.W.T.s. For months she retained her position at Flourish and Blott's, having received
a promotion upon leaving school. However, a particularly bad breakup with her boyfriend along with mounting curiosity about her mother's family spurred her
to leave the country for a while. After obtaining permission from the government, Skyla traveled to Canada to further research and possibly meet her
mother's family. She did not tell anyone that she was going abroad; she just up and left. She was there for two months and has recently returned to London
and landed a position with Germanus Publications as a copyeditor. It's a rather dodgy place of employment, but who ever said Skyla was an upstanding,
completely moral character? Besides, it's a job, and she needs something to pay the rent.
Important Relationships:
Catherine and Eric Davenport, parents: Skyla has absolutely no contact with her father. However, she has sporadic contact with her mother, but even that Skyla likes to keep at a minimum.
Jeremiah Davenport, brother: Skyla has not seen or talked to her brother since she was eleven years old. She figures she's not missing much, especially since he didn't come to Hogwarts. To here, there is no possible way that old and powerful magical blood from their mother would not have manifested itself in her brother. She cannot comprehend why he would choose a Muggle life over a magical life.
More to be added…
Loyalties - Personal and Family: Skyla is only loyal to herself. She has no love for the Dark Lord or his cause. She is not particularly fond
of Muggles, in fact she rather despises them, but she doesn't see the need for mass extermination of Muggles or Muggleborns.
