House: Ravenclaw
Year: Sixth
Birthday: October 6, 1962
Wand: Firm, 9 inches, Oak with Unicorn Tail Hair core
Bloodline: Pureblood
Pet: Meowsie, her male Abyssinian cat
Physical Description: Sapphira has always been treated as a rather delicate child and, given her stick-like, curve-less form, it can be argued that she is. She despises that, however, for she is far tougher than she may appear at first glance. Her face is rather angular, with a long nose and what she calls turny-uppy nostrils. She would give anything for plump cheeks, but she has been cursed with a rather pinched look. Her mouth appears almost too small for her face though, oddly enough, when she smiles it can look too big for her face. She doesnt smile all that often though. At least not big, broad, too-big-for-her-face sorts because that only shows off her crooked teeth. But, in her opinion, the worst of her features is her eyes. She likes the deep brown well enough, but she often bemoans that they are rather bug-like and sticky-outie. She might not be entirely in the wrong there.
Outside of her plethora of things wrong with me (did she mention her non-existent boobs?) she does love her hands, which she finds nearly as perfect as a pair of hands can be. Slender in a way that makes her think of a Victorian lady, she keeps the nails immaculately clean and polished at all times. She also loves her hair. She keeps her brown locks long and enjoys a natural curl to them, though she can get a bit of fly-away when the weather and the day dont agree with her.
She currently stands at 5 but hopes, desperately, that she will continue to grow. Being that her mother and sisters are all closer to six feet, there is hope. Unless she is cursed with her great aunts stature and, being that her sisters were all reaching closer to five foot five by the time they were fifteen, its possible she might be looking at only another couple inches. Still, this lack of height doesnt stop her from being assured of herself. She steps with a certainty of herself, or at least as much of a certainty as a fifteen year old girl could have.
In regards to her clothing, when not in uniform Sapphira is almost constantly in a pair of jeans. Tops, she's not overly concerned with and wears whatever is purchased for her which leaves her wearing mostly blousy sorts of tops in pale, pastel colors or in thickly knit jumpers of, again, pastel colors. She also has quite the collection of flip flops (though she wears them mostly in Greece and in other warm parts of the world - excepting the moments when she insists on flopping about in them in the commons despite her toes going numb on her). In amongst her jeans, blouses and jumpers she also has a few more ethnic choices including (though not nearly limited to) a Senegalese Bubu outfit in brilliant blue from Africa, a Japanese kimono embroidered with red and golden cranes and a deep red and purple sari from Ceylon. However, these more ethnic items are ones that, though she keeps with her at school, almost never puts on. She does have a closet filled with more traditional Greek clothing at her Aunt Dorothea's in Greece.
Personality Description: Being raised in a family with five siblings, Sapphira had to compete for just about anything she wanted and that competitive nature has followed her well into her days at Hogwarts. The very thought that someone else may do better than her nearly paralyzes her. This has led her to be passionate about her studies to a degree that she is often found to be up well past a reasonable hour redoing a paragraph in an essay or reading more on a subject to give her an edge in her studies. Her subjects don't come easy to her, but she does put her all into it. She has an incredible sense of direction, knowing full well that, though she has a healthy portion of the family inheritance coming her way upon her twenty-fifth birthday, she has every plan to someday become the head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation.
She holds a confidence about her that was developed young in her life as a result of the travel her family engaged in. Having been to so many places, she has a fine sense of open-mindedness and tolerance. She knows that not everyone in the world lives the same or holds the same values. And yet, this hasn't made her less opinionated or self-centered. While she can, with her friends, be kind and uplifting, she can be stubborn about the most petty of things. She is the sort of girl that will dominate a conversation if given the chance, talking over others and working to bring topics back to those she would prefer to speak of. Again, this is born of being part of a rather large family; if one couldn't speak up, one didn't get a say.
When it comes to the latest rumors floating about the school, Sapphira is always quick to get into the mix and help in the spreading of the gossip. She often fancies herself to be the very hub of the gossip circle, at least in the Ravenclaw House.
In relation to those in authority, Sapphira is usually respectful. Though she may not always agree with those in charge of her, she has been raised to give her elders their due respect for they have lived longer than she and have seen far more than she. This doesn't mean that she is always perfect, for she has been in detention more than a few times, generally for the moments when, in disagreement, she has been outspokenly belligerent. However, she is quick, once the detention is assigned, to go out of her way to apologize for her behavior.
Brief History: The history of the Higginbotham family is a long and complicated one. Here's the nutshell. In the mid-1600's Jesse Higginbotham, a down on his luck wizard, gambled away his last galleon in a card game that would, forever, change the outlook of the Higginbotham family. He walked away from the table holding deeds to no less than four gem mines on the small island of Ceylon off the southeast coast of India. Upon arriving there, he found that he had become more than just a well off wizard - he'd become wealthy beyond his very own imagination.
As the years and decades passed, the Higginbotham's continued to amass holdings in mines the world over, Ceylon becoming their largest holdings by far with operations covering garnets, sapphires, rubies, topaz and aquamarine amongst others. By the time that Sapphira's grandfather was born, the Higginbotham family held a seventy-five percent claim to a diamond mine in South Africa, emeralds and turquoise in Egypt, pearls in Japan and amber in England. It wasn't until after her father was born that the Higginbotham's first delved into agriculture picking up fields of tobacco starting in Greece.
Once Lars Higginbotham, Sapphira's father, was of age, the Hogwart's grad (for the family, though holding much of the wealth in Ceylon still owns and runs a sizable manor in London - their base of operations) took it upon himself to take a look into tobacco growth in other countries and, as a result, the Higginbotham family became quite mobile, Sapphira, herself, being born when the Higginbotham family lived for a two year stint in Tokyo, Japan. Her older sisters, four of them, and younger brother were also each born in different countries as Lars insisted that the family always stay together. Altogether, the Higginbotham family, though having assets world-wide, only have actual homes in Greater London, in Colombo, Ceylon. In other locations, they either room with friends or rent a home for the duration of their stay.
During Sapphira's life she has been in no less than ten different countries: some for a matter of months; some for a year. Until she was eleven, her brother and her were taught by the family governess (as each of her sisters before her), portkeying from location to location with the stern but kindly woman. Her education consisted not just of learning letters and maths, but of steeping herself in the culture of locations and learning some of the language. Museums, plays, historical landmarks, all it was incorporated into her education. However, when she was eight, her great aunt Dorothea demanded of Lars that the girl and her brother come to spend summers with her in Greece. Lars, reluctantly, agreed and thus began a more normal pattern for the girl.
Getting to remain in Greece each summer became something she really looked foward to for there she was able to develop some sembalance of real friendships. It was, for that reason, that Aunt Dorothea had been so insistent. But even still, by the end of summer, as the date for her and her brother to be picked up would arrive, she felt anxious to be back out again. Besides Greece, her favorite places to revisit were Japan and the United States; often she has been known to figure out some reason to pass by her father as to why the tabacco farms or pearl factory should be seen to. Both countries were so vastly different and she found that she enjoyed comparing and contrasting the differences between the two places as almost a game for herself.
She never liked France. Paris she found to be a cesspool of stink and Venice, in Italy, was even worse. She did enjoy Rome, however. However, a vast majority of time was spent in Ceylon, that being where most of their best producing mines are located.
Getting her letter to Hogwarts was expected, as was being sorted into Ravenclaw. She instantly developed friendships with those in her House and loved everything about her new life at Hogwarts; surprisingly, she found that she enjoyed planting her feet in one place for more than a handful of months. Still, she does miss the constant change of travel and reconnecting with various friends she has made. She also doesnt look forward to the yearly battle with Aunt Dorothea as to whether the young girl will spend the holiday in Greece or with bouncing about the world with her father and mother.
Important Relationships:
Father, Lars Higginbotham: She dearly loves her father even if he is a bit on the stern side with her. Their relationship is an easy one, as long as she treats him with complete respect. Every year, for her birthday, he gives her some sort of jewelry inset with sapphires. Her siblings each get something with their own particular namesake.
Mother, Rebecca Higginbotham: A graceful and soft spoken woman, Rebecca is the sanity behind her husband keeping the family in touch and always making sure that all things are packed and ready to go on an instant's notice.
Sister, Amber Johnson: Her eldest sister by nineteen years. Though the two get along well enough, they don't know each other well. Amber lives with her husband (Markus) and two children (Gracie and Faith) in Manchester, England.
Sister, Ruby Higginbotham: Ruby is thirteen years Sapphira's elder and the only of age sister not yet married. The two get along famously.
Sister, Opal L'Enfant: Eleven years older, Opal lives in Turkey with her husband (Frank), though they have no children as Opal views children with distaste. As it is, she barely tolerates Sapphira or Marcasite.
Sister, Pearl Meeker: Ten years older, Pearl and her new husband currently make their home in Cairo, Egypt. Sapphira adores spending time with the two, as she loves her brother in law deeply.
Brother-in-law, Rusty Meeker: He dotes upon Sapphira and teases her relentlessly in the way that Sapphira always imagined an older brother would.
Brother, Marcasite Higginbotham: Two years younger. The two dont really get along all that well.
Likes/Dislikes:
Likes: tea, books, Muggle movies, traveling, a good pair of comfortable well worn jeans with a pair of pretty flip-flops (well, the flip-flops when not in the UK, at the least), the ocean, gossip, nail polish, braiding her hair, reading, learning different languages.
Dislikes: sapphires - or really any type of gem stone or semi precious gemstone, noisy crowds, clueless people, arrogance, lies (even if she, herself, does it), pessimism.
Loyalties - Personal and Family:
The Higginbothams are a strange mix of loyalties as half the family is strongly supportive of purebloods and the other half strongly supports Muggleborn rights. Not Muggles. Just Muggleborn. Sapphira, for her part, is of that second ilk. While she is really not sure about the idea of marrying a Muggle, she doesn't believe that a Muggleborn can be blamed for having Muggle parents. If pushed, she can be quite vocal about it, though, she doesn't attempt to get into discussions on the subject.
