Physical Description: Though once a beauty of much refinement, Karina's appearance has changed much since she was bitten by the werewolf, Fenrir, on June 1, 1977. Her once well-toned figure has grown thin, her skin almost seeming to hang on her bones and her face, though still beautiful, is guant with large, dark circles nearly always present under her eyes. Whereas she used to find the beauty mark above her right mark to be an irritation, she now views it as a connection with a past she can't hope to regain.
Her habit of a daily run has disappeared entirely, and a cigarette sometimes coupled with a bottle of some type of liquor, have become such constant companions, she feels incomplete without one of the two on her.
Her dark hair, something of a pride and joy for her, has become lank and uncared for, her grooming habits something she only cares about when she needs to. Most days can find her in clothing she has slept in for a few nights - when she can manage to sleep - and most are falling into disrepair.
She now carries the scars of her attack: teeth marks on her left forearm and claw marks on her shoulder. Her own scars, self-inflicted since being confined in the cages beginning in February of 1978, have added to the desecration of her once nearly perfect body.
Personality Description: Karina has been, always a kind and friendly person, her nature being on to remain loyal to friends and family no matter the odds. She has a drive to understand others and a desire to help people in difficult situations. A hard worker, she throws herself with reckless abandon into her activities whether it be work, friendships, relationships or her hobbies. Her emotional intensity and sensitivity can often frustrate herself and others and she has learned through a number of circumstances in her life how to keep a hold on her own emotions.
Though her basic nature is still the same, she had added a bitter recklessness to the mix. Since her bite, she has, more than once, considered various ways to kill herself and has withdrawn to a degree that has led many a friend to completely cut her off; this is not something she finds disagreeable. She has gained a sarcastic, biting sense of humor that has made many flinch at her approach.
Brief History: Born to the Muggles Kevin and Diane Rheese in 1949, Karina was a much loved and doted upon baby girl. She attended Babington House School in Chislehurst and was a hardworking member of the Fry House. Throughout her younger years everyone around her noticed that she seemed to get things quicker and have an almost uncanny ability to squeak out of tight spots, however her parents simply put it off as their daughter having genius qualities never once suspecting that her abilities may have anything to do with magical powers.
In 1956 her brother, Darby, was born. Karina instantly fell in love with her baby brother and, once he was old enough to toddle about on his own, he trailed her about the place and was known on more than one occasion to cry when his Ri-Ri would leave for school, sometimes even refusing to leave the window at the front of the house until she would come home. When he was four, she left for her first year of Hogwarts and Darby looked forward to every owl she sent him.
Her parents reactions to the news that their daughter was a witch couldnt have been more different from each other. Her father found the whole idea intriguing even going so far as to insist on looking over her homework during holidays and asking her question upon question about the things she learned in her classes. His letters to her were filled with pride for her. Her mother took an entirely different road. Hers was filled with fear. She insisted that her daughter continue on at Babington claiming it would better suit her for the life she would be leading once she was of age. She lost the battle, though, and Karina and her have steadily grown further and further apart to the point where her mother barely acknowledges her anymore.
Karin was sorted into Hufflepuff and worked just as hard at Hogwarts as she had while attending Babington. In her fifth year she became a prefect and remained so through her seventh year. Upon graduating, she went to the Auror Training school where she found her future in the wizarding world. Graduating with top honors, she had the choice of any position within the Auror department and choose to take a position as an Intelligence Analyst. For six years, she worked hard and loved the job.
In the summer of 1976, Albus Dumbledore requested that she take the position of DADA Professor at Hogwarts. The position was not something she wanted, and Atheer had much convincing to do before the young Auror would take the position up. She grew to love the job, however; she had hoped to continue on in the 1976-77 school year, but all that was changed on the night of June 1, 1977.
She had entered into the forest to gather some needed supplies for the NEWT exam on June 2, when she was attacked by a werewolf. She managed to fight back, but had Hagrid not arrived on the scene with his crossbow, it is likely she would have been killed rather than just bitten. She has wished since, often, that the werewolf (whom she did not know was Fenrir) would have killed her.
Her life has changed dramatically since the bite. She recieved a severence from the Ministry even as she still lay in a bed in St. Mungo's. Atheer, unable or unwilling to accept her new position in life, disappeared. She cloistered herself off and considered, often, suicide. Her first full moon transformation, she met another werewolf, Morela Sanrevelle. Though the other werewolf seemed desirous of a friendship, Karina was unable to reciprocate at the time.
It wasn't until February of 1978 that she felt strong enough to make some sort of statement. She sent off a letter to the editor about werewolves; only weeks later she found herself, along with dozens and dozens of werewolves, locked in a cage in the Ministry for their transformation. A month later, she recieved a letter from a young Remus Lupin. She met with the other, uncertainity clawing at her; she found him to be a very pleasant person to talk to.
Now, with their friendship growing through the exchange of letters, she has found new potential to help her kind. Mr. David McKinley, an outspoken advocate for werewolves and others sentient creatures, hopes to bring her into a more viable role. With the uncertainity of it all, she has turned to the one werewolf she feels affinty with: Remus Lupin.
Important Relationships:
Atheer Valente: In 1974, she met the man who would soon become a staple of her thoughts. Her first impression of the man (besides that she found him rather hot) wasnt terribly flattering. She found him rather annoying and cocky. However, he won her over one night when they shared a cup of coffee and talk in a small caf. He left for Australia the next morning and she honestly didnt expect to ever hear from him again. When he showed up on her doorstep almost two months later, she couldnt have been happier. Since then their relationship has grown and, though they have their rough spots, they were doing wonderfully, until she became a werewolf. Now the man who once ruled her thoughts has disappeared and she is not sure if she will ever see him again.
Brother Darby Rheese: Her brother, though six years younger, is her closest friend. She loves him dearly and hates that she is keeping such a secret from him.
Father Kevin Rheese: The two of them get along extremely well. Her fathers love of nature, hiking and backpacking have rubbed off on his daughter and the two, up until the past summer, have spent a week each summer backpacking together. She has managed, thus far, to avoid having to explain her new condition, but she fears time is running out.
Mother Diane Rheese: Strained. Its the only word for the relationship between the two.
Athena Sterling: Darby's girlfriend. She first met the girl when Darby ended up in St. Mungo's after an attack in Diagon. Over the course of the last year, she has talked with the younger witch only a handful of times, but likes her.
Remus Lupin: She met the young werewolf first when he was her student; she became friends with him when he sent her a letter after her letter to the DP. Though younger than her by quite a few years, she looks up to him as the elder in their common bond as werewolves.
Likes: Backpacking in Ireland; coffee black; bangers and mash; the Classics (bookwise); blue skies; the beach; rain.
Dislikes: Reptiles; cheesy romance novels; laziness (though she does enjoy lazying about herself); rudeness; the moon; cages; pity.
Strengths and Weaknesses: She is a very insightful person and is very good at reading others which comes in handy in her job. Detail oriented to an almost obsessive degree, which can drive others nuts. Shes pleasant to everyone, even to those she cant stand which sometimes comes off as her being two-faced. She will staunchly claim that its only out of politeness that she treats everyone kindly to their face.
